When Past Relationships Ruin Current Ones

It makes sense that if we’ve felt emotionally threatened or hurt in our past relationships we may start to put up walls or shut down with those around us in the current time. This can cause us to lack trust in almost anyone and to expect that new relationships will disappoint us as past ones have. We may be quick to lash out or be defensive. The affects of this can be isolation, anger, depression and anxiety. Other affects are also possible.

While many who have been disappointed or hurt by others may start to question if they need anyone in their life I would argue that the value of human relationships is important to our healthy development. I often challenge those with such experiences to look at how they can feel safe in the current time while slowing taking safe risks in new healthy relationships. The key can be how to not allow past relationships to ruin future ones. Over time it can be possible to build positive relationships again where one can feel safe and able to trust.

If you are interested in learning some of the steps and skills that can be taken to help move beyond past dysfunctional relationships or to strengthen your current relationships please call or email me to schedule a counseling session in my Glens Falls, New York or Rutland, Vermont practice. 518-321-5591
